The Portland, Oregon-based Providence Health Plan is closing its Medicare Advantage and remaining health insurance operations at the end of 2026. This action follows its May announcement that it would end its ACA plan insurance operations.
Providence Health’s hospital and health provider network isn’t impacted by this announcement. The result of the announcement is that 64,000 MA members, 58,000 Medicaid members, and 260,000 commercial Providence Health members will need new health insurance options for 2027.
The large majority of these members will be in Oregon. Providence Health’s negotiations to “transfer” its Medicaid and Medicare Advantage members to another healthcare entity ended with no agreement, resulting in this closure announcement.
Providence Health’s 440,000 current ACA members will also need new health insurance options for 2027 during the upcoming OEP. Hundreds of thousands of Providence Health’s current health insurance members will need help in the last quarter of 2026.
There are many ACA, ancillary, commercial, and supplemental health coverage options to consider for Providence Health clients in 2027. Aetna, BCBS of Global Solutions, Cigna Supplemental Benefits, Devoted Health, HealthSpring, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and Medicare are some of the Medicare options available in Oregon.
The closure of Providence Health’s insurance operations continues a trend of mid-sized health system-owned health plans ending their operations in 2026.
